Frequently asked questions
About DryHaven
How does DryHaven work?
You call or send a request, and we connect you with an independent restoration company that serves your ZIP code. DryHaven Restoration is a referral service. We are not a restoration contractor. Calls and requests are routed to independent restoration companies that serve your area; those companies quote and perform all work.
Which areas do you cover?
Homeowners in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. can call or send a request. Partner coverage is densest in large metro areas and varies by ZIP code and type of damage. Each state page shows current coverage, and if no partner serves your ZIP, we'll tell you.
Does it cost anything to call?
No. Calling or submitting a request is free. The restoration company you're connected with quotes the work, and you decide whether to hire them.
What kinds of damage can you help with?
Water damage, flooding, burst pipes, mold, fire and smoke damage, sewage backups and biohazard cleanup.
Will the restoration company work with my insurance?
Most restoration companies document losses with photos and moisture logs and work directly with insurance adjusters. Ask about it when they call.
What should I do while I wait for a crew?
Stop the water at the main shutoff, turn off power to wet areas if it's safe, photograph the damage, and move valuables to a dry room.
About the damage
How long does it take to dry a house after water damage?
Most rooms reach a dry standard in three to five days with professional equipment. Hardwood, plaster and heavily saturated subfloors can take longer, and daily moisture readings decide when drying ends.
How fast should water be extracted?
As soon as possible. Within 24–48 hours, clean water begins to support bacteria and mold, and materials like particleboard and laminate swell beyond saving.
Why not just use fans?
Fans move air but don't remove moisture from it. Without dehumidification, the water evaporated from your walls stays in the room and soaks back into other materials.
Is flood damage covered by homeowners insurance?
Usually not. Rising water from outside is typically covered only by a flood policy (NFIP or private). Water from a burst pipe is a different claim under your homeowners policy.
Where is the main water shutoff?
In homes with basements, it's usually where the water line enters the foundation, near the meter. Slab homes often have a shutoff at the meter box near the street, plus a valve in the garage or near the water heater. Find it before you need it.
Will a water stain on the ceiling go away?
No. A stain means water got through, and the source needs fixing. After drying, the area needs stain-blocking primer and paint, or replacement if the drywall weakened.
Do I need a licensed company for mold removal?
It depends on your state. Texas, Florida, Louisiana and New York license mold remediation above set sizes. In other states, look for IICRC-certified remediators, insurance and a written scope.
Are home mold test kits accurate?
Settle-plate kits nearly always grow something because mold spores are everywhere outdoors. Without an outdoor comparison and lab counts, they can't tell you if there's a problem.
Is attic mold a deal-breaker when selling a house?
Not usually, if it's remediated and the cause is fixed with documentation. Buyers mainly want proof it was handled correctly.
How long does fire restoration take?
Cleaning and odor removal for a small fire can take a week or two. Larger fires with structural rebuild can take months, mostly driven by the insurance scope and permitting.
Is ozone safe for smoke odor?
Ozone is effective but harmful to breathe, so the home must be empty of people, pets and plants during treatment and aired out after. Hydroxyl generators are an occupied-space alternative.
Can I clean soot myself?
Small, dry soot spots can be lifted with a dry chemical sponge. Larger or greasy soot needs professional cleaning to avoid smearing it permanently.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewage backup?
Often only with a water or sewer backup endorsement, which most insurers offer as an add-on. Check your declarations page.
Does insurance cover biohazard cleanup?
Many homeowners policies do cover it, depending on the cause. The cleanup company can usually provide documentation for the claim.
